Styling Tips For Spring

By: Teronce Styyles

I’m BAAAACK giving some styling tips now that spring has sprung.  Now where do I begin?  I believe spring is the season of warmth, adventure, colors and of course, fashion.  Speaking of fashion, I’m starting to wonder what people really think about when clothes and warm weather mix together.  The reason for me saying this is that when the weather breaks and it starts to get warm outside, people just go ballistic.

Now that spring is here, I must lead you in the right direction of what to wear and how to wear it.  Fellas, this season I really don’t want to see the dresses that some of you have been wearing for some time now.  If you don’t know what I’m speaking of, they are those white/black tee shirts that come to your shins.  They look like dresses!  All you need is a nice wide belt and some heels and you will be on point (lol).  But seriously, stay away from them.  They aren’t fashionable, creative or stylish.  You can do better than that.

“It’s 2007 for goodness sakes; you need to dress like you are an adult with some sophistication, classiness, pride and purpose”

I see some fellas still haven’t learned how to wear their pants on their butts.  Do you know that you are advertising something that originated from guys that are or were incarcerated?  It’s time for boys to grow up and be grown men.  Take some initiative in what you look like.  What is it with guys wearing these GRILLS in their mouths?  Please don’t tell me that it’s a fashion statement because I’m here to say that it isn’t.  It’s just a lazy and trifling reason not to brush your teeth, which is so disgusting.  YES I SAID IT - IN NO WAY IS THAT ATTRACTIVE!!!  Spend your money on some stylish clothes instead of those pointless GRILLS.  I have said it before and I will say it again - life moves pretty fast if you don’t stop and take the time to look good.  Okay, so I’ve never said that before but it’s the truth.  Gentlemen, you really need to stand back and take a good look at yourself in the mirror and see how you can reinvent yourself from now into the future.  As you get older, I’m sure you will look back and see how ridiculous you looked and what you thought being stylish was all about with your pants off your butt, long white tee shirts and grills in your mouth.  It’s 2007 for goodness sakes; you need to dress like you are an adult with some sophistication, classiness, pride and purpose.  So my tip to every man that is not on the level of dressing like an adult is that you need to get rid of the thug/hood look.  Consult with a wardrobe stylist such as myself if you need guidance to direct you in the path of being fashionable and stylish.  I know it’s easier said than done but the first step is realizing that it’s time for a change.

Ladies, you are not getting off that easily, as there are some “fashion don’ts” that you are definitely guilty of.  This time around I’m going to focus on my full figured women; I’m not going to bash you by any means.  I’m a big supporter of full figured women.  With that being said, it’s the full figured women with dignity, class, sophistication, confidence, high self-esteem, positivity and attitude that have my biggest support.  I’m not fond of full figured women that don’t take pride in themselves.  For instance, wearing clothing that don’t compliment your body, funky attitudes and personality, not taking time with your appearance and hygiene and thinking that you can wear what a smaller female would wear.

I know having confidence and self esteem doesn’t happen overnight.  I’m a witness to it; I didn’t always have confidence and high self-esteem.  So all I’m saying is that you need to work on it and get to a level where you appreciate and take pride in you.  Once you do that others will do the same, but doing it for yourself is the key.  The thing about this day and age is the fact that there are stores, boutiques, stylists and designers that specialize in clothing for full figured women.  There is no reason why you can’t look fashionable in what you wear.  There are celebrities such as Queen Latifah, Mo’Nique, Jennifer Hudson, Toccara Jones and Chandra Wilson just to name a few, who always look good in what they wear and how they present themselves.  So you can do the same, don’t think that you can’t.  It’s simply mind over matter in a situation like this.  Spring has definitely sprung so I want you to look good this season.  If it don’t fit right it’s not right.  If you have rolls oozing out from your sides then you need to take the right precautions to make sure that it’s camouflaged.  If you have extra meat hanging from your arms then you need to wear clothing that has sleeves.

“I truly want you to be comfortable in your own skin.  Don’t allow anyone to tell you that you aren’t beautiful.”

Colors and patterns are very detrimental to full figured women.  You definitely need to be careful with stripes, polka dots and prints because they can make you look fuller than you really are.  Dark colors help compliment your body and bright colors may not help compliment the body at all.  Only you know what will work with your body.  If you don’t trust yourself it won’t hurt to ask for someone’s opinion.  If you ask for someone’s opinion make sure it’s someone who will not sugarcoat anything.  You want someone who will tell you the truth without hesitation.  I hope you can take criticism because it can become an unwelcome experience.

I’m going to speak on taking care of your health and body.  As some of you may know it’s been said that full figured women are unhealthy, lazy and don’t exercise.  I’m here to say that’s not true.  Full figured women exercise just like petite women exercise but of course society and the media don’t see it that way.  They assume that a woman with extra meat on her bones is lazy, unhealthy and doesn’t take care of herself.  So don’t be another statistic for society or the media.  Please take care of your health by going to your physician on a regular basis and eating the right foods.  I’m not saying that you need to go on a massive diet; you just need to balance what you eat and when you eat it.  Exercise is an important factor in maintaining a healthy body so take that into consideration.  Take time out and pamper yourself.  It can be a day at the spa, simply a visit to the beauty shop to get your hair styled or getting a manicure and pedicure.  Don’t forget to go shopping for clothing to add to your wardrobe that represents the new you.  Simply reinvent yourself in the department of fashion.  There’s nothing wrong with taking time out and spoiling yourself every once in a while.  I hope every full figured woman takes some of these tips and learns something from them.  I truly want you to be comfortable in your own skin.  Don’t allow anyone to tell you that you aren’t beautiful.  Just remember…you have to treat yourself like you are beautiful before anyone else can.

Until next time remember to stay fashionable and fabulous!

Fashionably yours,

Teronce Styyles
