TS: April, thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview with me.

AM: Thank you for considering me.

TS: It was my pleasure. How are you?

AM: I’m doing well.

TS: That’s great to hear. I’m going to start the interview asking you, who is April Miller?

AM: April Miller is a divorced woman who was married for five years that’s where Miller comes from. I’m also an only child, raised by a single mother in DC although I’m an only child I grew up around a lot of cousins, aunts and uncles.

TS: I can definitely relate, I’m an only child as well. When did you realize that modeling was something that you wanted to do?

AM: I went to a performing arts school in DC where my teacher informed me that the school was having a fashion show and I should be apart because I was all legs. I ended up portraying RuPaul in a skit within the fashion show. I knew from that moment that modeling was something that I wanted to do in my spare time.

TS: What was the project that really made you shine and put your name out there in the industry?

AM: I would have to say that it was a collaboration of things within me such as my personality and attitude towards modeling along with being an accessible model to many designers. Modeling is what I do as a hobby not a profession. It’s simply something that takes me out of my basic 9 to 5.

TS: How long have you been modeling?

AM: I have been modeling since 1993, so about fifteen years?

TS: Wow, that’s a long time.

AM: Yes it is. I’ve definitely learned a lot in the industry.

TS: Who supports you through your journey in the fashion industry?

AM: My mother is my biggest supporter, no matter what I’m doing or where I am, if she is available she will come out and support me.

TS: Are you comfortable being involved in non-traditional jobs within the modeling industry?

AM: Yes, I am. I do my best not to play the safe girl. I like to do unpredictable things, so that has also given me the perception of who I am in the modeling world.

TS: What do you enjoy most/least about being a model?

AM: What I love the most is becoming an image of someone else’s creation. I allow the professionals in the industry to use me as their canvas to create the illusion of what they envision.

TS: I commend you for having a positive outlook as a model in the fashion industry.

AM: Models should remain humble and become an open minded professional in this industry.

TS: You are absolutely correct.

AM: My least favorite thing about modeling is the fact that everyone desires to be a model. Not everyone who desires to be a model is serious about the industry.

TS: OMG, you hit the nail on the head with that statement.

AM: I don’t think people really take it to heart. That’s the part that really kills me. It seems to me that models are born everyday. People who are interested in becoming models should have passion for the art. Models are a canvas trying to persuade an image, if models understand that everything else will come easy.

TS: I’m so glad you said that because there are so many who want to be come models and don’t have the determination, persistence or dedicated to endure the necessary trials and tribulations it takes to be successful in the industry.

AM: You have to pay your way in this industry.

TS: Absolutely. How do you handle rejection?

AM: Everyone has a different image of perfection. I know I’m not the typical model that most professionals want to work with. Rejection is a part of life.

TS: What types of work are you interested in pursuing within the industry?

AM: Runway is definitely my choice of work to pursue because it’s an adrenaline rush for me.

TS: What would you do if you never reached your goals in the modeling industry?

AM: The only goal I have is to take what I have learned and share it with upcoming models. I know it will take sometime but my retirement plan is to create either my own modeling agency or school.

TS: Who’s your favorite designer?

AM: I would have to say Tristan Blake because he was one of the first designers that I ever worked with. I love the way that he designs with the idea of showcasing the curves of a woman regardless of their size or shape.

TS: How would you describe your fashion sense?

AM: I don’t necessarily think I have a fashion sense. There are times I put more effort into what I want to wear but then there are times when I’m looking for something to wear that I don’t have to iron.

TS: Are you trendy or a trend setter?

AM: I would have to say a trend setter because I don’t want to walk in a place where someone has the exact same thing that I’m wearing. I’m the type of person that would be the item on the rack that no one finds interesting.

TS: Which trend do you wish never existed?

AM: The low rise jeans. Just because they make them in your size don’t mean you need to wear them, lol.

TS: LOL, you are so right about that. Who would you say is the best dressed female celebrity?

AM: I love the style of Gabrielle Union. I definitely admire her.

TS: What do you think is the hottest trend out today for females?

AM: The high waist pants are a great accent to your waist line. It gives you that mid-section separation that females find comfortable.

TS: If you could work with one model who would it be?

AM: It would be Naomi Campbell. I think she has a reputation that is misunderstood. I would love to see that for myself and get my own perception of her.

TS: If you could work with one photographer who would it be?’

AM: I haven’t been blessed with the opportunity to work with Roy Cox as of yet.

TS: Do you have any other interests/talents?

AM: Yes, I do and it would be dancing.

TS: What type of dancing?

AM: Actually all of it. I’m not fond of classical ballet because I love my feet too much for that but I had the opportunity to perform it’s just not for me.

TS: What makes you different from other female models?

AM: I don’t take it serious.

TS: What do you feel you need to learn in order to become one of the best?

AM: More discipline is what I feel I need to become one of the best. You need discipline to be focused in this industry.

TS: Have you ever competed in any fashion/runway competitions?

AM: I competed in a couple pageants. One was Miss Baltimore which I placed as first runner up. The second was Miss Chocolate City which I also placed as first runner up. So, I’ve tried the competitions but it just requires too much discipline and right now I’m not fit for it.

TS: What makes April uncomfortable?

AM: Lingerie makes me uncomfortable because I believe it’s very personal. I may do a lingerie show maybe three times out of the year just to get out of my shell. I’m also uncomfortable when someone calls me sexy, it really bothers me.

TS: WOW, I would have never thought that you didn’t like to be called “SEXY”. That’s definitely an eye opener for me, lol. What would people be surprised to know about April?

AM: People would definitely be surprised that I don’t take modeling seriously. I also love to sleep; it’s at the top of the list.

TS: Yeah, I was definitely surprised when you said that you were only into modeling as a hobby. Where do you see yourself in the modeling industry?

AM: Someone that professionals in the industry can depend on whether they are designers, other models, fashion show directors, etc.

TS: What advice would you give to upcoming female models?

AM: Don’t let modeling overwhelm you, you overwhelm it. Really create a love for the industry. Take advice and criticism, love yourself, learn to relax and do what makes you happy.

TS: What’s next for April?

AM: I don’t set goals for myself because I don’t want to get disappointed. I just go with the flow of things. I want to continue to do fashion shows and photo shoots. I’m turning thirty this year so I’m having a big birthday bash.

TS: Well, let me say an early Happy Birthday to you, lol. Do you want to add anything that we haven’t discussed?

AM: Don’t let other people’s opinion of you hinder you at the end of the day. Don’t become the image of someone else.

TS: April, thank you so much for taking the opportunity to do this interview with me.

AM: It’s my pleasure and I look forward to the Fashion Issue.

TS: You have just witnessed this lovely interview with Ms. April Miller. This is Teronce Styyles and I will catch you on the RUNWAY!!!!
