Esclave de la mode

Faced with answering the question of “what does fashion mean to me” was much more challenging than I imagined it would be, I am a lover of fashion for certain, I read all the typical fashion magazines, gaze at each editorial spread and designer ads for minutes at a time usually taking me at least an hour to finish it. But what does fashion truly mean to me is a little difficult to explain.
In a sense fashion means everything to me. I love how it is ever-changing, un-predictable, exciting and adventurous, I love the way it can be a way of expression, representing what I like and even how I’m feeling. Everyday it gives me an outlet to be creative, be myself, and show the world my personality and a piece of me. I am intrigued on fashion as a form of art and how the two mimic, complement, and are sometimes on in the same. Every season I wait to see the new color palette, prints, textures, and fabrics and begin to think of ways to make them my own. As the French would say “esclave de la mode”, I am a slave for fashion. It has enslaved me in the sense I must watch it, and make it a part of me.
On the other hand fashion does not define me as a person, I don’t compliment it, it compliments me. I love to see and watch fashion but I don’t follow every trend that comes about, I pick and choose what fits me. To me fashion is not all about designer brands I don’t get stuck on who made it. I don’t fiend for every “it bag” of the season or worship any designer, don’t get me wrong I have my favorites but it stops there.
So what does fashion mean to me? An opportunity to show a piece of myself to the world, a creative art form of expression, it’s where I aspire to make my career and a daily way of life for me. It’s me pulling together colors, fabrics, shoes, hats, textures, prints, and adding another beautiful spectrum to me. Fashion simply put, is one of my favorite pieces to my complex puzzle.
