As
a Fashion Editor for Excape the Matrix I feel it is my duty to have you the
readers take a trip into my world as I
continue in my journey down the path of fashion. I have been pursuing a career
in
fashion for several years now and I have to say that it has been both
challenging and
rewarding. I have achieved goals that I never would have imagined in all my
years of
living and I know I’m going to achieve a lot more. I’m not sure if any of you
know but
my ultimate career goal is to be an actor. The art of fashion as I think back
has been
apart of my life all along. I was just given an opportunity to bring it to life
and express
my creative talents to everyone.
I just thought I would give you a little taste of how fashion became apart of my life without having to go in so much detail before I inform you of my experience working New York Fashion Week for the first time ever. For those that are not familiar with Fashion Week in New York it is one of the biggest events ever to exist. Fashion Week in New York happens a few times a year to showcase the hottest and latest fashion from pioneer designers to upcoming designers making a statement in the industry. The events are embraced by the presence of well known celebrities, press, buyers, paparazzi, fans and admirers from all over. New York has several fashion weeks that are showcased such as Olympus Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Harlem Fashion Week and Nolcha Fashion Week.
Speaking of Nolcha Fashion Week this was the event that I had the privilege of working as a Wardrobe Assistant while I was in New York. I was honored and delighted to be given the opportunity to be apart of such an astonishing event. Most fashionistas who are striving to be in the fashion industry would do anything to be given the chance to work any type of Fashion Week.
At Nolcha
Fashion Week, there were designers from all over the world showcasing their
creative talents and skills on the runway. There were designers from London,
Indonesia, Canada, California, Atlanta, and the list goes on. One of the
designers that showcased their talent on the runway is a designer for the hit
soap opera, The Bold & The Beautiful. Another designer who participated in the
designer competition is from Baltimore but resides in Atlanta, so that was
surprising and wonderful to experience.
There were models of all different ethnicities and cultures both female and male. If I had known I would have gotten some of the models from Maryland to make an appearance and spice up the runway. Don’t get me wrong the majority of the models were runway material but they weren’t giving me what I thought was needed and that was some flavor. Nonetheless, the fashion shows went really well and everyone who worked backstage assisting the models and designers really did a wonderful job. We worked as a team, which was so refreshing to experience considering how much it’s a disadvantage here in Baltimore. I apologize but that’s what I have experienced and is my opinion. Until something changes for the better, that’s what I’m sticking to.
I got to meet and network with some of the designers and coordinators of fashion week as well as other staff members that were working the event. The events were all day so there was a lot of work to do and you had to be on top of your game. The industry of fashion is very fast pace and can be overwhelming. Everyone has to be on one accord so that the show runs smoothly. Organization, preparation, knowledge, understanding and most importantly communication all play a part in having a successful and operating event. Most of all you have to be passionate and love the art of fashion.
I was tired after everything was over but I didn’t experience it while I was in the mix of it all because it was fast paced and there was so much to do. Even when there was down time that was the chance to network and get to know people in the industry. Networking is definitely a key factor not just in the entertainment/fashion industry but in any profession. Never underestimate the power of networking, it can take farther than you could ever imagine.
This is
definitely an experience that I will never forget nor take for granted. I need
to be apart of events such as Fashion Week everyday of my life. I need to be
around people who are just as passionate as I am about the in
dustry.
New York is the place to reside if you are looking to pursue a career in the
fashion and/or entertainment industry. I have made a major decision in my life
that New York will be my permanent home very soon. I already had plans to
relocate but I was torn between Atlanta and New York. I came to the realization
that New York would be a better place for me considering I’m there every month
with its fast pace and I’m surrounded with so many individuals who have the same
passion that I do.
So for any of the readers out there who have a passion for entertainment, fashion or any profession that your heart desires don’t be afraid to approach those desires and work towards making it happen even if it means you have to relocate. I know it can be tough, difficult and you may even be nervous about it but trust and have faith that it will all work out for the better. Trust me I’m going through those emotions and fears right now as I write this article but one thing that’s keeping me sane and motivated is the fact that I believe, I have faith and God is by my side through it all. Well, I want to say thank you for allowing me to invite you into my world and I hope I have encouraged you to take that big step in your career. Until next time remember that FASHION IS NOT A LUXURY!!!!
Fashionably yours,
