On Saturday, May 12, 2007, I attended the new New York City Broadway musical, “The Color Purple” with my mother and cousin for a pre-Mother’s Day gathering.  American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino starred as, the central character,  Celie.  The Broadway play, which was based on the book that was adapted into a film in 1985 and directed by Steven Spielberg, starred Whoopi Goldberg as the central character Celie. Though nominated for 11 Academy Awards, it did not win any.

“I was so overwhelmed by her performance that it just gave me reassurance to continue on with my journey.”

It was lovely to see how this story transformed into a Broadway musical, especially after  having seen the movie several times.  The play had a stunning cast that just blew me away.  I have to say that the singing and dancing were absolutely stunning as well.  I couldn’t imagine it being any other way.  I was hesitant to see how Fantasia would perform as an actress after her Lifetime movie, “Life is Not a Fairytale”.  It wasn’t really good to me because I didn’t see her as an actress.  In my opinion, she was really just playing herself and reliving her life experiences.  This musical really proved that she has the skills to be an actress.  Her singing was phenomenal!  I was so moved by the song she sang called “I’m Here” that it gave me chills and goosebumps.  When they did the curtain call and Fantasia came out to take her bow, I couldn’t hold back my tears.

I was so overwhelmed by her performance that it just gave me reassurance to continue on with my journey in the entertainment industry.  This is definitely a must see musical.  I recommend that everyone see it because it’s truly an inspiration.  It’s not too late to see this wonderful Broadway production.  Ms. Barrino’s contract was originally over in October 2007 but she was blessed to have her contract extended until January 2008.

“This play really proved that she has the skills to be an actress.”

In recent news, Fantasia stated that the role has been draining for her.  The pressure is on for her to really make the role of Celie be what everyone has known it to be.  She mentioned that it’s a lot of work day in and day out to hear people call her “ugly” because of the role that she has embraced so well.  She said God didn’t put nothin’ on her that she can’t bear.  I’m truly proud of her in everyway, as she truly has a long and prosperous future ahead of her.  Wow, I feel like I know her (lol).  That’s weird!  I guess that’s how people who are in the limelight can fill your heart with joy and inspire you to continue on with your own journey to success.
